Carmen Juices Atlanta!
Okay so school is kicking my butt, but what else is new? Today I had some awesome juices.
My green juice consisted of:
1 bunch spinach, 1 bunch watercress, 1 bunch cilantro, a few cucumbers, 1 bunch celery, 1 apple
(It made me run to the bathroom for a few bm's! Powerful stuff. Maybe it was all that raw oxalic acid in the spinach.)
I also juice a 1/2 of a big watermelon although I only drank about 1/2 of that juice.
And after my lab today, I had a coconut water.
Today I was craving a salad so I chewed up a small handful of romaine. I chewed and savored every bite until it because a juice in my mouth. It's a slight variation but one I'm okay with.
I barely drank water today--tomorrow I'll drink more.
Today's juices:
2 liters green juice:
1 bunch rainbow chard,1 bunch cilantro, lots of cucumbers, handful blackberries and strawberries, 1 bunch celery
1 liter fresh o.j.
coconut water
lemon water
I don't know when this juice fast will end...I'm taking it one day at a time.
I don't know when this juice fast will end...I'm taking it one day at a time.
Okay so after writing the paragraph above I did some juicing. Here's today's yummies:
I had another fruit blend/strain of kiwis, blackberries, strawberries, oranges, pears and fresh celery juice to balance out the sugars. I blended Spirulina in 1/2 the batch. For my green juice today I juiced celery (1 bunch), parsley (1 bunch), 2 lemons, 3 apples --truth be told I was a little low on greens. Later on today I went to the farmer's market so I'll have lots of greens. I got rainbow chard, cilantro, watercress, cucumber, celery spinach, and seeded watermelon, oranges, apples, grapes...
I want to share with you this website/blog I found. I'm probably the last one to find it, but I'm sharing it anyway. It's the website of Kimberly Snyder. She's out of this world. In a nutshell she's a Georgetown University Clinical Nutritionist grad, turned world traveler, turned living out of her tent/car in Africa, India and other exotic places for months, turned New Yorker, turned Hollywood Celebrity, turned Vegan raw food, health and beauty educator, but somehow stayed very grounded, centered and loving. She is absolutely gorgeous and a yogini with heart of gold. Yesterday I went through several pages of her blog which goes back years. She is so inspiring and down to earth as well. I wish I could tell her "Thank you" in person for being such a wonderful human being.________________________________________________________________________
So I ended up changing my juice program a bit today. Initially I was going to make watermelonade and some green juices, but instead I made a "fruit punch" (about 2 liters worth) with watermelon, blackberries, fresh orange juice, and grapes. This one I might have to add to my recipe book. It's so refreshing and fruitfully delicious. Usually I make super green juices but today mine came out looking like Welch's grape juice. I only used a little green so...To this juice I added one of those huge Japanese white radishes, a bunch of celery and half of a big purple cabbage. It made a lot of juice. It's sounds like an odd mix, but it's got a lot of distinct personality. It's got a zing from the radish but is quite yummy--really it is! It's also very light because of the lack of starch content. It's got a delicate on the top and looks like purple ale!
This morning I made an amazing juice. It was celery, cucumber, apple, rasberry and blackberry. OMGoodness! I drank a quart in one sitting. Later a drank a quart of watermelon juice. The juice of 2 oranges. I also had coconut water today after my lab in school, and a quart of carrot parsley juice. I am trying to drink large quantities of juice and water also. I have so much energy and my thinking is clear. Life is good and I feel blessed to be juice feasting for rejuvenation.
My mom just sent us an amazing package from Europe. She's on one of those Celebrity Cruise ships out at sea singing. She's a jazz talent from Hawaii named Azure Mccall. Check her out .
I made juices from two ends of two ends of the spectrum today.
Fruit: Fresh orange juice, strawberries, blackberries.
Veggie: Bok Choy, celery, hot peppers, cucumber, fresh basil, lemon
Breakfast:1 1/2 liter water with lemon and MSM
Last night I made a Supergreen juice with celery, radishes and their tops and some other green stuff.
taking four classes. Things are busy! I've been well though and very active. On Friday we played a funny version of baseball at the park and I was flying from base to base light as feather. It was a great workout to say the least and the kids had a blast. Yesterday we spent the day in the pool. I've been drinking plenty of juices--lots of green juice, citrus juice and some carrot. I'm just going by what I feel like drinking and it seems to be working. I also find that water is important too--even with all the juices. Water flushes out stuff and I can see that when I go to the bathroom. I feel great. (All the while I'm doing homework whenever the opportunity presents itself.)
My refrigerator is jam packed with produce. It's hard to fit it all in our fridge, because my kids eat lots of fruit in the summer. We keep lots of produce on the kitchen table but still! I feel blessed that God is supplying what we want and need. I know there are many people out there that wouldn't dream of a juice fast and might see it as extravagant. I see it as necessary for me right now to make my body healthy. I will be an effective nurse to help others--to REALLY HELP OTHERS (not just give them drugs) if I am healthy myself.
Of course this journey isn't just about the juice. It's about learning self-control and bringing my mind, body and consciousness to a state of greater peace. It's about becoming highly mineralized. It's about taking care of this temple God gave me. It's about loving myself so I can better love others. It's about teaching my children to make healthy choices. It's about dissolving some of this bad matter that's trapped in me of old hurts, pains and memories. It's about transformation.
This morning I had some of the juices I made last night. I don't have much of an appetite and so I sip about 8 ounces at a sitting. I also had some lemon-cayenne water earlier. On the physical side I did some rebounding and stretching while my kids played with Playdoh. Then I had a cornmeal face scrub followed by a lemon clay mask. I feel lovely, but and still detoxing and I so I also feel weak and reserved. This morning I am 148 lbs.
More homework now...
Feeling no hunger today whatsoever, but very tired.
Drank mostly lemon honey water, carrot-cacao juice, and grapefruit juice.
I just came home from school and I'm making tomorrow's juices.
Tomorrow I'm Juice FEASTING--I have three varieties:
carrot ginger
celery parsley apple
mustard green apple cucumber
I snapped a quick photo:
Initially I was thinking to start a fresh blog, but there is some good information posted on my previous pages that might help or inspire a reader. If anything you will see my earlier struggles and sometimes knowing other people struggle too, but continue to persevere can also be a source of inspiration. In any case, let's get started.
Last night I made juice on my Green Star juicer. I made 1 1/2 quarts pure carrot juice. 1 quart of tomato, celery, cucumber, red leaf lettuce, pepper, ginger, rosemary (fresh), sage (fresh), thyme (fresh), garlic, lemon juice. (That's my raw version of a V-8. It sounds quite busy but it's yummy.) And I bought 1 quart of fresh grapefruit juice from the Farmer's Market . That's my juice for the day.
This morning however i am drinking warm nettle tea with lemon and wildflower honey. I also had a coffee enema earlier this morning. For several days now I have been eating lots of fruit and juicing (along with other food), and so my body has already begun cleansing. I know this because my nose has been unusually runny all morning.
Weight: 152.4
My hero David Avocado Wolfe and I (years ago!)
I wasn't sure if I was having a healing crisis--with emphasis on the word crisis, or if I was doing something wrong, or if I had lost a lot of the good bacteria in my gut or what. I was also loosing a lot of weight at a rapid rate. Anyway, I've come to the conclusion that it was a combination of all three.
I'm looking forward to more entries in my blog here. I've really missed it. It's very therapeutic for me and give me a clarity on what exactly I am doing. I don't really know if there is anyone out there reading this. So perhaps this is for my own education and healing.
Carmen
I had a humungoid bowel movement earlier and felt renewed, followed by 2 more, and then there was throwing up and a cycle of both. I leave this blog to go back to my bed with a heating pad curled up in a fetal position. Detox sucks.
Homework time...
So far here's what I had today:
1 pint Chocojuice (see yesterday's post)
1 oz. wheatgrass (and yes I still think it taste disgusting.)
1 pint coconut water
1 quart green apple-orange juice (diluted later with some water)
1 quart carrot-celery-red habanero juice--and I'm still drinking that one because it's like fire water.
I always line the vessel catching my juice with a nutmilk bag. After I finish juicing I simply squeeze the remaining liquid out of the juice and I am left with a clean pulpless juice. It's important to not eat too much pulp on a juice fast, because the pulp stimulates the appetite. Also juice without any pulp is ideal for quick assimilation and hardly any digestive effort is put out by the body. That way the energy can be redirected for healing anything that's not right in the body.
Another use for the nutmilk bag is when you blend juice in the blender. You can just pour it though a nutmilk bag after and you're left with a similar product.
Happy juicing.
My son did however help me juice today and we had a lot of fun and made a big mess. But what's fun without a mess.
For breakfast I wanted chocolate mylk, so here is what I made. I'm calling it
Carmen's Chocojuice
Carmen's ChocoJuice:
1 pint spicy carrot ginger juice
1 teaspoon raw carob powder
1 teaspoon raw cacao powder
We made the juice first and then blended in the powders. As JJ would say on Good Times, "It was Dynomiiite!" It sounds like a strange combination, but there is something about carrot juice that is reminiscent of mylk and so the combination works. It's kind of like making raw pies with avocado as a filling. Our minds tells us "No avocado does not go into pie!" But when you puree the avocado with some softened dates, vanilla and carob powder it taste just like chocolate pudding pie filling. I guess there are times in juicing when we have to entertain new creative ways of thinking. This makes a longterm juice fast do-able and puts a whole new spin on carrot juice.
Later Kona and I juiced this number. I made 2 quarts of juice. Again this was another winner.
Well since I named the first juice I guess I shall names this one too. Hmm what about...
Kona's Green Hawaiian
1 big pineapple
1 big pineapple
4 cucumbers
1 bunch parsley
1 bunch watercress
1/2 head of romaine lettuce
6 celery sticks1/2 head of romaine lettuce
I'm off to do some yoga and homework...
Later for dinner I had onion-potato broth strained with flaxseed oil, nutritional yeast and a dash of shoyu.
And even later 22 ounces of coconut water.
This post will be brief.
Today I woke up kind of late and the kitchen was a mess and so I wasn't able to make juice until about 4:00 when I got home. In the morning I was desperate and so sucked the juice out of a few grapes and
had a few sips of my son's bottle apple juice. (I can hear those juice police sirens.)
At 4:00 I made a large batch of green apple-spinach-celery and lemon juice. It was about 1 1/2 quarts worth and it was so ridiculously delicious.
Later I drank about 22 ounces of coconut water and made some rooiboos tea that I took to my evening class in a thermos.
Insert James Brown audio track here. :)
Also today was my juice party day after coming home from the Farmer's Market with so much goodness. So here is what I had.
In the morning, the juice of 2 oranges.
Later, 1 pint spinach-cucumber and green apple juice.
Spinach Cucumber Green Apple Juice
At about 4:00 I had some water with clay and ACV.
For dinner I had the kick-arse juice of the day, and as we say back home in Hawaii, "It broke da mouth!" Translation: "It was so delicious that my mouth is no longer working!" Check it out. It had dandelion-parsley-green apple-beet and lemon. I made about 3/4 of a quart and juice topped the quart up with water. The apple, beet and lemon totally neutralized the bitterness of the dandelion. My liver will be happy tonight.
Dandelion-Green Apple-Parsley-Beetroot-Lemon Juice Prep
Dekalb Farmer's Market
And I even bought some freshly made juice for the day:
1 pint "Organic Sprout Symphony" which has alfalfa sprouts-romaine-cucumber-celery-ginger-sunflower sprouts.
1 pint "Lean Green Pineapple Treat" which has pineapple-apple-parsley-romaine lettuce.
1 quart Grapefruit juice--diluted with 1 quart of water so it's not so mouth puckering.
And before heading to the market I had some sparkly apple juice (apple juice and sparkling water). I'm looking forward to some fun juices this week. I'm so thankful to have an amazing farmer's market nearby with lots of organic produce, reasonable prices, and the resources to be able to make better choices for myself and my family. I am truly blessed.
Morning weight=131 lbs. (15 lbs weight loss in 9 days.) My weight loss is pretty drastic for my size and so I am adding in some fat. For "dinner" right now I am simmering a yummy broth made of potato peels, carrot peels, onion, dulse seaweed and celery. Before eating it, I'll add 1 tablespoon of organic red miso, and 1 tablespoon of stone-crushed olive oil, strain and drink.
Good night.
1 quart cucumber apple juice. This juice was delicious! Oh my. My daughter kept asking for more.
I would only give her a little more so I offered to make her some carrot juice instead and she said yes.
I'm so happy my kids are drinking some of these juice with me!
1 quart Master Cleanser juice--lemon-maple syrup-cayenne pepper.
And lots of water! Today I just did not want to see another glass of carrot or beet juice. So I opted for some variety. My variety was limited because my car battery died and was stuck home in the snow. Lucky for me, I had no appetite and easily made the kids (mine and others) and warm lunch of oven fries, fresh homemade vegetable soup and sandwiches. (I love it when my kid's friends come over and eat and later tell their parents how the loved the weird vegetarian foods at my home. Their parents often remark to me, "My child NEVER eats that! I need the recipe!") My kids eat a lot of rawfood in the spring and summer, but once it gets cold out, I balance things by making hearty vegetarians soups and stews, different wholegrains and vegetable dishes. They love my cooking and uncooking and are healthy beautiful children. Anyway, after work Joe got me a new battery, and so now tomorrow morning I'm headed to the farmer's market with my shopping list.
Goodnight.
Spinach-cucumber-celery-tomato juice
And carrot-collard green juiceI woke up this morning to get my 8 year old ready for school and Joe was juicing all the vegetables I'd prepped last night. He does a lot of my juicing because it's physically demanding feeding all those hard veggies through the Green Star juicer (twin gear). We have another juicer in our home (a cheap $40 one) that is easy to feed vegetables through, but you have to drink the juice immediately because of enzyme loss issues. Sometimes in a rush, or when Joe doesn't make me juice I use that one. Or I rough it out and Green Star it. It's sure nice to have a man around to do the manly stuff. :)
Variety in beverages also helps. As I mentioned before, one kind of drink I also enjoy on a juice fast is fermented beverages. Some kinds are rejuvelac, kombucha tea and a personal favorite of mine fermented cabbage juice.
Fermented cabbage juice gives you all the benefits of sauerkraut in a quick easy to make and ingest format. And it taste absolutely delicious! Mine comes out a little carbonated with a wonderful flavor. The problem with mine is that it's so good, it doesn't last long and I have to keep making it.
Here's my simple recipe. Once you understand the concept behind it you can try many different variations.
Items needed:
-1 head organic cabbage
-2 organic beets (optional but adds health benefits, flavor and a lovely burgundy color)
-Any glass jars with fitting lids. (For large batches I use the recycled gallon glass jars
that the apple juice comes in and for smaller batches I just use 2 or three mason jars.
Use what's in your kitchen.)
-Good quality water
This is the cabbage-beet mixture fermenting above my fridge.
1. Roughly chop the cabbage and beets.
2. Fill your blender about 1/2 full with equal quantities cabbage and beets.
3. Add water to fill. Then pulse the contents until the cabbage looks like it's shredded.
4. Pour mixture into the clean jars. (Boiling isn't necessary--they just need to be clean).
5. Set aside in your kitchen for 2-4 days and gently shake and open the jars every day for a few minutes to release the trapped gases. (Important or else you will have a volcanic explosion later!)
6. Cabbage mixture should smell fermented but not off. You will come to know and love this smell
and it will make you salivate when you smell it.
7. Strain out the pulp from the cabbage juice using a nutmilk bag.
8. Store in fridge in clean covered bottle and enjoy.
This is a great beverage for putting healthy bacteria in your intestines. It will help you if you have digestive and constipation issues.
Fermented Cabbage Juice (with beet). Delicious!
Lemon-water in the morning
1 quart carrot-beet-apple (I have about 8 ounces leftover in the fridge for tomorrow.)
1 quart cucumber-celery-collard green-garlic
1 quart fermented cabbage juice
My weight this morning was 136 lbs. That means I've dropped 10 lbs. in 6 days.
I was not really trying to lose weight as my height is 5'9" , but any toxic weight is always good to lose.
After the juice fast I will rebuild a better quality body.
Weight this morning 137 lbs.Green Goddess
Todays juices are...drumroll please,,,
1. Carrot-beet (About 1 quart).
2. Celery-cucumber-green pepper-collard green-garlic-lemon aka The Green Goddess. About 1 quart).
Celery is the winner in this juice for me. The high organic sodium content is very satisfying if you are having any salty cravings and it also balances out your intake of juice when you are consuming a lot of sweet juices. Organic sodium is important in the body for keeping lymph and blood from becoming too thick. Cucumber is great for the hair. skin and nails and makes you go wee-wee or shee-shee as we say in Hawaii, thus flushing those kidneys. And what girl doesn't need her kidney's flushed from time to time! Garlic makes it taste yummy and kills parasites. Lemon brings all the flavors together and is a natural tonic for the liver. Lemon also had good Vitamin C.
Beet Apple Carrot Love
A word of warning. This juice may cause you to see pink in the toilet--so don't be alarmed!
There are some schools of thought that say to not mix fruit and vegetable juices together. We each have to be the judges of our own bodies. This combination works perfectly for me. It makes me feel tingly great.
Aside from this juice today I've also had my "orange-soda" drink (orange juice and unsweetened sparkling water). The sparkling water seems to curb my appetite. I think it's a bit of a compromise, but I can think of a lot worse I could be drinking right now. Later tonight I'm going to the gym to spend some time in the sauna to sweat, sweat, sweat.
Some other things I'm doing on this juice fast are: oil pulling, dry skin brushing, sauna, epsom salt baths, light exercise, yoga and deep breathing, enemas, reflexology, reading, visualization, meditation, prayer, exercising new patterns of thinking...I think you get the idea.
As time permits I'll explain each item (and others)more in detail. I don't have a rigid schedule of doing all these things, I just go with what feels right in the moment. There are exceptions however--like the juicing (duh!), skin brushing and physical cleansing things are done regularly to keep the toxin exiting out.
This morning I had a orange juice mixed with some sparkling water--served in a wine glass of course!
Later I made juices made on my Green Star:
1 1/2 quarts of: beet-carrot-green-apple (delicious!) and 1 quart of butternut squash-daikon radish- parsley-garlic and lemon. This one has a spicy kick but is quite delicious.
A little secret: A little lemon squeezed into funky juices makes them taste really good!
End of day weight=139 lbs.
My son eats Vitamineral Green!
In the morning:
Barley Tea sweetened w/ a little brown rice syrup
Lunchtime:
Quart water with Vitamineral Green powder
Dinnerish time:
Pineapple-coconut juice from Wholefoods
Tonight I'll have some more Vitamineral Green and call it a night. Tomorrow morning I'll make some
magical juice creation.
I was planning on juicing with a friend today and so kept putting off juicing until she came over. She never showed. My kids and I went to the park, and I knew I couldn't wait to make juice when I got home, so I went the Wholefoods route--because I was getting really weak. I hope the juice police don't find me and give me a "not drinking carrot juice fine". That coconut pineapple juice did hit the spot especially
Overall I feel good and don't have much hunger. I was just weak at the park which could also be attributed to the icy cold weather. I am looking forward to an early bedtime again. Last night sleep felt very healing to my body.
Who named this vegetable "butternut" anyway?
It's that time of the month, perhaps that's why I'm going for rich grounding juices. I've taken it pretty easy today and will be going to bed around 9:00. Weight 146 lbs.
Can I sample everything?
Last night I cheered in the New Year with some friends and family. 2010 seemed to have come so fast. The New Year is always exciting though. There's that feeling that something special is going to happen. I love the optimism. I want to keep it with me throughout the year.
Today is Day 1 of my juice journey. I woke up this morning (after going to bed at 3:00) not hungry at all. It was sort of disappointing in a way because I was all psyched up to make juice.
It's 5:00 and all I had today was about a quart of lemonade. But tonight I will make some juice, although I'm still not very hungry or thirsty.
